Your mission, should you choose to accept it:
Survive the DBACT 500m 20’s Regatta. In peak summer heat. In algae-soup water. With zero breaks, fast turnarounds, triple-racing chicks and a race schedule that quietly tested our commitment to Mako Mojo.
Mission Brief: Racing? No.
Reality: Race training in its purest, most brutal form.
Cue the theme music…..
Mako fielded 25 paddlers across Women’s, Open’s, and Mixed, each briefed with the same instructions: trust the plan, trust the technique, trust each other. Use the regatta as a long, hot training session. Training to race.
What followed was a grindhouse of heat, fatigue, and algae-slick chaos. Heat shimmering. Boats launching again and again. Some women backing up for nine 500m races, because apparently recovery is a state of mind.
Equipment issues? Of course. At one stage, the entire on-board audio system went missing, but was later found in a not-so quiet, private moment between sweep and the back of the bus… “Jane… my cord is stuck in your crack.” Mission control later confirmed this was not in the training manual.
Turnarounds were savage. No breaks. Hot. Tired. Dehydrated. Sure, there were challenges as Bob Seger’s Mongolian yak milk fart drifted through the boat, was absorbed into clothing, unsettling and humid. Mojo was summoned. Deep reserves unlocked.
Results check:
- Women’s: 5th
- Open’s: 5th
Solid. Gritty. Improving across the day per the mission brief.
But then… the Mixed crew.
Slowest qualifier into the final and hanging out in Lane 6. No heroics. No panic. Just discipline. Trust. Training. A quiet nod across every bench that said “we’ve done the work.”
And when it mattered—when fatigue was screaming and the heat had taken its toll—our flint-hard iron women backed up for their third consecutive race. No complaints. No drama. Just hardcore fitness and absolute Mako commitment.
Final race of the day. 500m Mixed Final.
Throttle open. Technique locked. Hearts pounding in sync.
Mako grabbed the chocolates.
Mission accomplished.
Debrief summary:
- Heat: hostile
- Water: questionable
- Turnarounds: relentless
- Spirit: unbreakable
This mission will not self-destruct. It will live on as another chapter of Mako Mojo—earned the hard way, under pressure, when the plan mattered most
