Mako is fortunate enough to spend our time paddling on Jervis Bay and racing in Dragon Boat NSW National and international regattas. The seeds of Mako started with a single $250 ready-for-the-scrap-heap dragon boat, borrowed paddles and a bunch of enthusiastic Jervis Bay locals. In addition to the challenges of training and racing, Mako is a passionate member of the Jervis Bay community and relishes the opportunity to give back to the community that has embraced us.

Community Mako
Clean Up Australia Day
Excitement buzzed through the club as we gathered to make a difference for Jervis Bay. Armed with sturdy garbage bags and a shared determination, we formed a spirited brigade at Woollamia Boat Ramp and car park. With each piece of litter we collected, our bond with the bay grew stronger, knowing we were doing our bit to help keep the bay we are so fortunate to experience every week clean and beautiful for others.

SASSHI 60km Marathon Fundraiser

Beyond racing success, Mako Paddle Club continued to strengthen its commitment to community engagement throughout the season. One of the standout initiatives was the 60km Ultra Marathon Paddle—a massive endurance effort undertaken that raised $2000 for SAHSSI (Supported Accommodation and Homelessness Services Shoalhaven Illawarra). Tackling unpredictable conditions on Jervis Bay, paddlers pushed their physical and mental limits over several hours, drawing both donations and attention to a cause close to the club’s heart. The event exemplified the club’s spirit of going beyond sport to make a tangible impact in the broader community.

Mako Community Give Back Day
2024 Community Give Back Day: A Celebration of Jervis Bay
Building on this commitment, Mako hosted its annual Community Give Back Day, transforming the shores of Jervis Bay into a hub of celebration, fun, and shared purpose. The day brought together more than 60 club members, families, and locals for an event that blended social connection with environmental care and community pride.
Mako members were on hand in large numbers to mentor and share their experiences, reinforcing the club’s ethos of inclusivity and support. Activities ranged from an introduction to technique through to head-to-head racing off Husky Beach; all carried out with Mako’s signature mix of enthusiasm and humour. It wasn’t just about paddling; it was about giving back to the community and the beautiful bay our club calls home.

Lifeline Push-up Challenge

For the third year, Mako participated in the Lifeline Push-up challenge. Mako entered a 10’s crew who pushed out an impressive 26,539 pushups in 23 days, between June 4 and 26, 2025. Mako raised $1,535 for Lifeline, which supports not only services focused on mental health but also provides support services across communities experiencing challenges such as bushfires and floods.

Milton Show
After trading in our paddles for boots and donning our Club JB logoed Club t-shirts, Mako volunteers rallied to manage the bustling car parks throughout the exhilarating three-day Milton Show. Our commitment to community service shone as brightly as the smiles we exchanged with every visitor we welcomed to the Show.
Racing Mako
