Mako is fortunate enough to spend our time paddling on Jervis Bay and racing in Dragon Boat NSW and National (and maybe international) regattas. The seeds of Mako started with a single $250 ready-for-the-scrap-heap dragon boat, borrowed paddles and a bunch of enthusiastic Jervis Bay locals .
Early Days
Overcoming early nerves, this feisty crew went from strength to strength through bushfires and a pandemic, to grow Mako to a vibrant and often chaotic club training on Jervis Bay and racing at Dragon Boat NSW and interstate events. Our competitive target for next year is the AUSDBF Nationals titles where we compete in Premier (<40) and Senior A (40-45) racing.
Race Day…Our Favourite
Races are predominantly sprints in nature with distances ranging from 200 to 2,000 metres. Crews made up of 10 or 20 paddlers, a sweep and a drummer compete in 14-metre boats featuring the traditional brightly coloured dragon heads and tails.
Mako is fortunate enough to be located between our main racing locations of Sydney and Canberra and interstate, where we embrace as much racing as possible throughout the season. If there’s a chance to head out for a race, count us in!
