On a wild Jervis Bay Sunday morning, Mako left the boats ashore and convened in a socially separated Vincentia wind tunnel for coffee, a yarn and the first season kick-off AGM.
The Management
As the club continues to grow and capture the attention of the Jervis Bay community, the Committee has also grown to spread the joy of management. In a voting avalanche (aka uncontested positions) the hypothermic membership welcomed the new committee, comprising
- President – Bear
- Secretary/Coach – Chicki
- Treasurer – Sonja
- Registrar – Val
- General Committee Member – Janine
The State of the Mako Address
Some old salty calling himself President ramnled on for a while but made a key point for all members – we are all on this journey together. That means doing the right things to manage COVID, reading and actioning what you’re asked, bringing suggestions to the table, rolling up the sleeves to help whenever you can, recruiting, fundraisning, the list goes on….
Take for example, gentleman farmer Simon Katz who is taking the lead in sorting out our funky new club stickers. Great for paddles, cars and shamelessly promting the club. Well done Simon 🙂
The focus areas for the 20/21 season are:
- Recruitment – Who doesn’t deserve the gift of paddling with Mako? The more members we have the more opportunities we have to race, and the benefits of having two boats out at training should never be underestimated. Life factors into all our plans, but with more members, it doesn’t mean a couple of people out for some reason takes a whole crew off the board.
- Fund raising – the association membership and insurances consume pretty much all funds coming in and we need $ along the way just to keep the club functioning. If you have a fundraising idea, no matter how big or small, grab a Committee member and let’s get on with raising much needed back up funding. The club is in a very fortunate position to have boats, paddles (remember your first session and they were just magically there), covers and a bunch of other kit normally needed before you put a paddle in the water. That kit will only take us so far.
The Year Ahead
Coach Chicken outlined a season plan that can be said is nothing short of action packed, with over 20 racing events available for Mako to rampage through. Reality and some other pesky factors may trim that list back a little, but there is definitely some clear contenders of must race events that we will aim for. Check out your Season Plan and Racing Calendar as sent with the AGM Minutes.
Thanks
A big shout to Sonja our first Treasurer who set up the books and wrangled the dollars across the year. The books arrived in pristine condition ready for annual reporting.
To Gav and Chicki, brilliant job on the 2XU and Chinese Triad uniform orders. We are dressed and ready for action.
To Chicki, 100% enthisiasm from day 1 and always ready to go the extra yard to ensure that every member has the chance to live and experience ther own dragon boat journey.
To our members, without you Mako is just an idea. With you, Mako is a presence on Jervis Bay that lights up the water with smiles, shenanigans, sweat and slobber. Stay on the journey and brings some new mates along to share it with. We’ve said it before and will many times….dragon boat paddling with Mako will change your life.
Here we go
Cheers, Bear
