Mako Paddle Club recently hosted its annual Community Give Back Day on Sunday morning on the stunning waters of Jervis Bay. Club members and more than 60 members and locals gathering to experience dragon boating on Husky Beach. This event showcased the thrill of dragon boating and highlighted the club’s commitment to giving back to the community that supports them.
“Club Jervis Bay supports Mako, and this year, we wanted to show our thanks by giving back to the Community and sharing the sport we love and are so fortunate to experience every week on Jervis Bay.” Said Mako President, Simon Katz.
The Spirit of Dragon Boating
“Dragon boating is a centuries-old tradition that promotes teamwork, discipline, and physical fitness. At the Mako Paddle Club, these values are central to both our competitive goals and our place in the Jervis Bay community. The Community Give Back Day was a vibrant reflection of this mission, bringing together paddlers of all ages and skill levels to enjoy the scenic beauty of Jervis Bay while fostering community bonds.”
Mako gathered early in the morning, and excitement was palpable as families and new friends arrived on Husky Beach. The day began with a brief introduction to dragon boating for newcomers, emphasising safety, technique, and the sport’s rich cultural history. Mako members were on hand in mass to mentor and share the experience, reinforcing the club’s ethos of inclusivity and support.
A Day of Paddling and Purpose
As the sun rose higher, the dragon boats took to the water, their vibrant colours glistening under the clear blue sky. New friends and Mako members paired up and took to the water, and the drums echoed around the bay. Each stroke was a display of athleticism and a symbol of unity and shared purpose. The camaraderie among paddlers was palpable, with laughter and encouragement ringing out as they worked together to overcome a rising wind.
On shore, BBQ maestro Dave Molyneux was cooking up a storm and keeping the sausage sandwiches flying (and frying) as new friends and Mako members laughed and embraced the experience of another incredible day of dragoon boat paddling on Jervis Bay. Mako thanked Husky Bakery for donating the bread and, as always, our friends and supporters in Club Jervis Bay for loading us with sausages.
A Lasting Impact
As the morning rolled on and the wind started to kick up, the Community Give Back Day wrapped up with a gathering on the shore, where participants shared stories and reflections on their experiences. The Mako Paddle Club’s Community Give Back Day was more than just a fun day; it celebrated community spirit, resilience, and a shared commitment to making a difference.
For those involved, the day served as a reminder of the power of community engagement and the joy of working together towards a common goal. As the Mako Paddle Club grows, its commitment to giving back to the community will undoubtedly remain at the forefront of its mission, inspiring future generations to paddle with purpose.
